About the area
San Martino di Castrozza developed as a mountain resort in the late 19th century, becoming increasingly popular with alpinists and tourists during the early 20th century. The area has been part of the Trento region for centuries, with its economy traditionally based on forestry and agriculture before transitioning to tourism. Trento was ruled by Prince-Bishops for centuries before becoming part of the Austrian Empire in 1815. It was returned to Italy after World War I and later became an autonomous province in 1948, developing into a center for winter sports and mountain tourism.
