GoCastra exists because camping in Europe is brilliant — and finding the right campsite, and figuring out how to actually get there, has always been harder than it should be.
When I was younger I went interrailing across Europe with a tent and no real plan. The best places were always the hardest to reach — tucked away in valleys, high in the mountains, reachable only after a long hike through stunning countryside that most people never bothered with. I'd camp somewhere remote and spend days walking from site to site, with nothing but a trail and a tent. That was half the appeal. Getting there was part of the adventure.
As the years went by, priorities changed. These days I travel with young kids, and a five-hour journey involving three trains, a bus, and a long walk with luggage isn't the adventure it once was. I'd spend hours finding somewhere that looked perfect, only to realise the nearest airport was 150km away and there was no direct route. Back to square one.
There are plenty of websites that list campsites. Almost none tell you what it actually takes to reach them. So I built GoCastra. A campsite directory built around the journey as much as the destination.
Every campsite has a transport rating — not to put people off difficult places, but to be honest about what the journey involves. If you're after a remote hiking base that takes half a day to reach by train, that place is on here and it's rated accordingly. If you need somewhere the whole family can get to easily from the airport without losing the will to live, that's on here too. The rating just helps you find the right fit for where you are in life right now.
You'll find real directions from the nearest airport and railway station, public transport routes, drive times, and ferry crossings where they're relevant. And because the kids love a holiday park as much as I love sleeping under canvas, there's room for all of it.
