Battle of Warns (1345)

Friesland

The Battle of Warns is one of the most important medieval battles in Dutch history and a defining moment in Frisian identity. It took place in 1345 when a Dutch army led by Count William IV of Holland attempted to conquer Friesland.

The expedition ended in disaster when Frisian farmers and warriors defeated the heavily armed knights, using their knowledge of the marshy landscape to overcome a much stronger opponent.

Today the battlefield near Warns is remembered through monuments and cultural events. Visitors can explore the peaceful Frisian countryside and cycle along the former battle area.

Although fought just across the modern German border, the Battle of Woeringen had major consequences for the history of Limburg and the Netherlands. The conflict decided control over the Duchy of Limburg and changed the balance of power in the region.

The battle involved thousands of knights and soldiers, and the victory of John I of Brabant strengthened Brabant's influence over the Low Countries.

Battle of Ane (1227)

Overijssel

The Battle of Ane was one of the most significant medieval conflicts in the northern Netherlands. It was fought between the Bishopric of Utrecht and the forces of the Lords of Coevorden.

The heavily armoured knights of Utrecht entered the difficult marshy terrain of the eastern Netherlands, where local fighters used the landscape to defeat them — a reminder that medieval warfare was not always won by the strongest army.

Today the battlefield area near Ane offers peaceful countryside walks and cycling routes through the Overijssel landscape.

Battle of Heiligerlee (1568)

Groningen

The Battle of Heiligerlee is remembered as the first major military victory of the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule. It marked the beginning of the long struggle that eventually created the independent Dutch Republic.

The battle took place when rebel forces led by Louis and Adolf of Nassau defeated a Spanish army in Groningen province. Although the victory came at a cost, it became an important symbol of resistance.

Visitors can explore the battlefield landscape, memorial sites and the nearby village of Heiligerlee, which contains museums and walking routes.

Battle of Jemmingen (1568)

Groningen Region

The Battle of Jemmingen was one of the earliest and most brutal clashes of the Dutch Revolt. After the initial rebel success at Heiligerlee, Spanish forces under the Duke of Alba launched a devastating counterattack.

The battle demonstrated the military strength of the Spanish Empire and temporarily weakened the Dutch rebellion.

Although the exact battlefield lies partly outside today's Dutch borders, the conflict shaped the history of Groningen and the northern Netherlands.

Battle of the Zuiderzee (1573)

The Battle of the Zuiderzee was a crucial naval victory during the Dutch Revolt. Dutch rebels known as the Watergeuzen defeated a much larger Spanish fleet, helping secure control of important waterways.

The battle showed the importance of naval power in Dutch history, where rivers, lakes and coastal waters often determined political control.

Today visitors can explore historic towns around the former Zuiderzee, including Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Medemblik. Cyclists and campers can follow the Zuiderzee Route, one of the Netherlands' most famous long-distance rides.

Siege of Alkmaar (1573)

North Holland

The Siege of Alkmaar was a turning point in the Dutch Revolt and one of the first major defeats suffered by Spanish forces. After months of fighting, Dutch defenders successfully resisted the Spanish army.

The famous decision to open the surrounding dykes and flood the countryside helped force the attackers to withdraw.

Visitors today can explore Alkmaar's historic centre, city walls and museums, while the surrounding countryside offers excellent cycling through polders, dunes and waterways.

Battle of Nieuwpoort (1600)

The Battle of Nieuwpoort was one of the most ambitious military campaigns of the Dutch Republic. Although fought in present-day Belgium, it had a major impact on Dutch military strategy and independence.

The army of Maurice of Nassau achieved a famous victory against Spanish forces, demonstrating the effectiveness of Dutch military reforms.
