Kasteel de Haar
Utrecht
Kasteel de Haar is the largest and arguably the most spectacular castle in the Netherlands. Located near Utrecht, this fairytale-like fortress combines medieval architecture with 19th-century restoration.
The castle was originally built in the Middle Ages by the powerful Van Zuylen family but was heavily damaged over centuries. In the late 1800s, architect Pierre Cuypers — famous for the Rijksmuseum — transformed the ruins into the magnificent neo-Gothic castle visitors see today.
Visitors can explore lavish rooms filled with artwork, armour and family treasures, while the surrounding gardens, forests and lakes make it a great stop for cyclists and outdoor travellers.
