Xanten Roman Archaeological Park
North Rhine-Westphalia
The Archaeological Park at Xanten sits on the site of Colonia Ulpia Traiana, one of the most important Roman cities north of the Alps. Founded in the 1st century AD, it became a major centre of trade and military activity.
Today visitors can explore reconstructed Roman buildings, temples, city walls and an impressive amphitheatre. Unlike many archaeological sites where only foundations remain, Xanten allows visitors to experience a vivid recreation of Roman urban life.
The surrounding Lower Rhine landscape is ideal for cycling, with flat routes, riverside paths and nearby campsites making it a great destination for families and outdoor travellers.
Best for: A vivid reconstructed Roman city, great for families.
