About the area
Köpenick was an independent city until its incorporation into Berlin in 1920. The area gained fame from the 1906 'Captain of Köpenick' incident when Wilhelm Voigt impersonated a military officer to commit a hoax. The district has medieval roots dating back to the 13th century, with its castle serving as a residence for Brandenburg electors. Berlin became the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1701 and later the German Empire. The city was heavily damaged during World War II and subsequently divided between East and West until German reunification in 1990. Today it stands as a symbol of German history and European integration.
