About the area
Ilfracombe developed as a fashionable seaside destination during the Victorian era when improved transport links made coastal holidays accessible to the middle classes. The town's growth was driven by the construction of the railway line to Barnstaple in 1874, which transformed it from a small fishing village into a popular resort. Many of its distinctive Victorian buildings and landmarks, including the iconic Landmark sculpture, reflect this prosperous period. Devon has a rich maritime history dating back to the Tudor period, when Sir Francis Drake and other naval commanders played crucial roles in defending England against the Spanish Armada in 1588. The county was significantly affected by the English Civil War, with numerous coastal fortifications built during this period. Devon's economy historically relied on fishing, wool trade, and agriculture, with the ports of Plymouth and Exeter serving as major commercial hubs.
