About the area
Originally established as a military fort in 1655 by General Monk during the English Civil War, it was renamed Fort William in 1690 after William III. The town developed as a strategic Highland settlement and later became a centre for the whisky, timber, and aluminium industries. The Highlands have a complex history shaped by clan systems, the Jacobite uprisings of the 17th and 18th centuries, and the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The region transitioned from feudal Highland society to modern Scotland while maintaining strong cultural traditions.
