About the area
Albufeira was founded by the Moors in the 8th century and was known as 'Al-Buhera'. The town was captured by the Portuguese during the Reconquista in 1249. It remained a small fishing community until the tourism boom of the 1960s and 1970s transformed it into a major resort destination. The Algarve was under Moorish rule for nearly 500 years until the Portuguese Reconquista was completed in 1249. The region's name derives from the Arabic 'Al-Gharb', meaning 'the west'. It became an important maritime centre during the Age of Discovery under Prince Henry the Navigator.
