About the area
Dornie has been an important strategic location for centuries, with Eilean Donan Castle first constructed in the 13th century on a small island at the confluence of three lochs. The castle was destroyed by English forces in 1719 following the Jacobite Rising and remained in ruins until its restoration in the 20th century. The area has strong ties to Highland clan history and Jacobite heritage. Ross-shire was historically a stronghold of the Clan MacKenzie and other powerful Highland clans, playing a significant role in Scottish feudal politics and the Jacobite uprisings. The area saw the construction of numerous castles and fortifications to defend clan territories and strategic positions. The Highland Clearances of the 18th and 19th centuries significantly depopulated the region as estates were converted to sheep farming.
