The Krapina Neanderthal Site is one of Europe's most important prehistoric discoveries. Excavations in the late 19th century revealed thousands of Neanderthal bones and stone tools dating back around 130,000 years.

Rising beside a tranquil lake surrounded by woodland, Trakošćan Castle is widely considered Croatia's most beautiful castle. Originally built in the 13th century as a defensive fortress, it was transformed into a romantic neo-Gothic residence by the Drašković noble family during the 19th century.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Zagorje countryside, Veliki Tabor is one of Croatia's most recognisable medieval castles. Built mainly during the 15th and 16th centuries, the fortress belonged to powerful noble families including the Ráttkay family.
