About the area

Rapallo was an important trading port during the medieval period and was frequently attacked by Barbary pirates, leading to the construction of defensive towers along the coast. In the 20th century, it became a fashionable resort destination, particularly during the Belle Époque era. The town is also notable as the location of the 1917 Rapallo Treaty, a secret agreement between Germany and Russia during World War I. Liguria has been a major maritime power since the Middle Ages, with Genoa serving as one of Europe's most powerful republics and competing with Venice for Mediterranean trade dominance. The region was historically known for its shipbuilding, fishing, and merchant fleets that established trade routes throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. In the 19th century, Liguria became a tourist destination for European aristocracy seeking the mild climate and natural beauty of the Riviera.
