About the area
Cala Bassa has been inhabited since ancient times, with evidence of Phoenician and Roman settlements in the area. The beach and surrounding region developed as a fishing community before becoming a popular tourist destination in the late 20th century. Ibiza was founded as a Phoenician settlement called Ibosim in the 7th century BCE and later became a Roman port. The island's strategic location made it valuable through medieval times, with fortifications still visible in Dalt Vila, the historic old town.
