About the area
Poreč was founded by the Romans as Parentium in the 1st century BC and served as an important port city. During the Byzantine period, the magnificent Basilica of Euphrasius was built in the 6th century, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town was later ruled by Venice for centuries before becoming part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Istria has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was colonized by the Romans who named it Histria. The region was dominated by Venice for nearly 700 years before falling under Austrian rule, and was eventually incorporated into modern Croatia in 1991 after the Balkans wars.
