About the area
Hattingen was founded in the 13th century and developed as a trading town along the Ruhr River. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it became an important center of iron and steel production, though it has since transformed into a cultural and tourism destination. The old town's timber-framed houses date back several centuries and survived World War II largely intact. The district was formed in 1975 through the merger of several municipalities and evolved from coal and steel manufacturing. The region played a crucial role in Germany's industrialization during the 19th century and has since undergone significant regeneration and cultural development.
