Built on a dramatic mountain pass above Split, Klis Fortress is one of Croatia's most historically significant strongholds. For centuries it controlled the gateway between the Adriatic coast and the inland Balkans. The fortress played a major role during conflicts between Croatian rulers, the Ottoman Empire and Venice. Its location on a rocky ridge made it almost impossible to attack. Visitors can walk through ancient walls, towers and viewpoints overlooking Split, the Adriatic Sea and surrounding islands. Its dramatic scenery has also made it a famous filming location.
