Derry City Walls

County Londonderry, Northern Ireland

The walls of Derry are among the finest examples of a complete historic city fortification anywhere in Europe. Built between 1613 and 1618 during the Plantation period, they completely surround the old city and remain remarkably preserved. Visitors can walk the full circuit of the walls, exploring historic gates, cannons and views across the River Foyle. Derry's walls allow visitors to physically walk through centuries of political, military and cultural history.
