Built in the late 18th century for the Austrian Netherlands' rulers, it later became home to Belgium's royal family after independence. Although the palace itself is not generally open to the public, visitors can admire the impressive exterior and explore the surrounding Royal Greenhouses of Laeken, which open seasonally and contain one of Europe's most remarkable collections of exotic plants. Located close to Brussels, it is an excellent stop for travellers combining cultural sightseeing with nearby parks and cycling routes.
