Founded as a military camp on the Danube frontier, Carnuntum grew into a major Roman city with temples, markets, villas and public buildings. At its peak, tens of thousands of people lived here, making it one of the most significant centres north of the Alps. Today visitors can explore reconstructed Roman houses, temples, streets and archaeological museums. The site is exceptional because it allows travellers to experience Roman history rather than simply view ruins.
