Fought between French and Imperial forces, the battle ended with the capture of King Francis I of France and confirmed the growing influence of the Habsburg Empire in Europe. The battlefield outside Pavia is now surrounded by modern countryside, but visitors can explore museums, monuments and historic locations connected with the event. The region is excellent for cycling, with flat routes through the Po Valley.
