La ViaRhôna follows the Rhône from Lake Geneva at Saint-Gingolph to the Mediterranean at Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, passing through Lyon, the Ardèche gorges area and the Camargue wetlands on the way to the sea.

Routekaart

Terrein

Mostly flat to gently rolling, following the river valley on dedicated cycle paths and towpaths, with the only real climbing near the start close to the Alps. Well signed as part of the EuroVelo 17 route.

Tips

The stretch through the Camargue at the southern end is a highlight, with flamingos and wild horses visible from the trail. Because it follows the river valley, the route is well sheltered from crosswinds compared to more exposed coastal cycle routes. Lyon makes a natural roughly-halfway stopping point to break the trip.
