Alta Via 1 runs from Lago di Braies to Belluno through the heart of the Dolomites, linking a chain of mountain refuges beneath iconic peaks like the Tre Cime and Marmolada. It's the oldest and most popular of the Dolomites' numbered Alte Vie, well within reach of a hiker with normal fitness and no technical climbing experience.

Mapa de la ruta

Terreno

High alpine terrain on generally good paths, with some steep, rocky sections and via ferrata-assisted sections near Forcella Marmolada (an easier bypass route avoids the exposed cabled section for those without via ferrata gear). Well waymarked with the AV1 number and red-and-white markers.

Consejos

Book rifugi (mountain refuges) well ahead for July and August — this is one of the most popular alpine treks in Europe and beds go fast. A via ferrata kit isn't essential if you take the marked bypass around Forcella Marmolada, but check conditions before deciding. Most walkers take 8–10 days.

Permisos y acceso

No permits required — refuge bookings are essential in peak season but are a matter of reservation, not official permission.
